cemetery visit

We took the kids to a cemetery. We called it homeschooling. The boys were required to copy down the names of any 5 deceased individuals, plus the year of their birth and the year of their death. Later at home, they had to figure out the age at which each person died. Basic math. And then, from their sampling of 5 persons, determine the average age of death. One lady, a mother of twins, had died at age 37. One young man had only lived to age 21. Another man made it to age 93. We also saw the grave of a civil war veteran!

Then we transitioned to the Bible. How does the Bible describe death? When do you think you will die? What do you imagine will be your cause of death? Old age? Cancer? A tragic accident? (I wanted the boys to give serious thought to their own mortality.) Who alone has power over death? What did Jesus mean when he said, The one who believes in me will live even though he dies?

Did these truths sink in? Maybe yes, maybe no. The boys were eager to get outside and play soccer. We'll keep working on it.

  2. Pretty clever Don! A nice little field trip that mixed in to school subjects, Bible and Moth!

On a more hilarious note, Bud's gonna love the tomb stone! Fits him to a "T". :)
