Is this saving me money?

I'm tired of the kiddos leaving the lights on in their bedroom and the bathroom. How much money is that costing me over the course of a year? But more than costing money, it's draining on my nerves. "Who left these lights on? Why can't you people turn off these lights? Electricity doesn't grow on trees! How long have these been on?!"

Yeah, man, my nerves.

So I paid about $15 bucks a piece for these motion-sensing light switches. The light turns on automatically when you enter the room, and stays on as long as it senses you moving around in the room. It turns off by itself... yes, by itself, baby!...5 minutes after you leave the room.

So I want to know, how long will it take for this little gadget to pay for itself in electricity savings?

But even if the savings are minimal, at least I'm doing a lot less screaming and hollering!

  1. Genius. I'm linking this to my husband. We leave lights on all the time and it drives him insane, too.

  2. I should add that these switches do have an "on" position, which will keep the lights on constantly. But I've tried to make it clear that the "on" position is NOT to be used!

  3. Where did you get them? And, do they work for outside lights, or A/C's?

  4. Nancy picked them up for me at Wal-mart, I think. Or home depot, or any such place. There are outside lights (floodlights, etc) with built-in motion sensors, so that the porch light comes on as someone approaches, or as a car pulls in the driveway, etc. You wouldn't want use a motion-sensing switch like this for an air conditioner, I don't think.

  5. You don't have a son named Bud! LOL Love him dearly, but he sure knows how to leave a rm w/o turning the a/c off first! :)
